Mike and Chris Nelson purchased the Northern Hotel at auction in 2009 with a clear vision to make it the most modern hotel in the area, with 4-star amenities and service, while still preserving its unique history and grace. They worked long and hard to achieve this goal. The interior of the hotel was stripped back to the concrete and completely remodeled from its previous state. The Northern now includes 160 guest rooms and suites filled with first-class amenities, a gym, gift shop, two restaurants-TEN and Bernie’s Diner-and more than 12,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, ranging from small business suites that you can rent for a day to a large ballroom that can be divided into two smaller rooms if desired. The new Northern is here to stay and will again be known around the nation as the finest hotel in Montana. Since the renovation the Northern Hotel received the 2013 Historic Preservation Excellence Award from the Montana Preservation Alliance (MPA) on October 24, 2013. The award is given to individuals who display creative vision and tireless efforts to keep Montana history alive. The Northern Hotel was recognized as an outstanding commercial renovation project.
