Rock31 Member Spotlight: Josh Toenyes, Cardsetter

Meet Rock31 Member – Josh Toenyes!

Josh is the co-founder of Cardsetter – a web development company that streamlines and simplifies getting online for small businesses. “Answer a few questions and Cardsetter will build you a beautiful website that reflects your vision and attracts the right customers for your business. Cardsetter will help you figure out “what to say,” what pages you need, and more—we make awesome websites easy.”

Josh has a strong background in web development as both a software engineer and as an independent software consultant. “Working in web development for years prior to starting Cardsetter revealed so many opportunities to improve and simplify how small businesses get online. It shouldn’t be a giant mental hurdle to figure out what pages, text, and photos to use on your website, and it shouldn’t be rocket science to build it!” So, Josh and his business partner, Jessica Baldwin, lit the Cardsetter fire and built the company that helps small businesses build a easy to use and visually pleasing website.

In 2016 Josh and Jessica began working on the idea and wrote the first line of code for Cardsetter. They brought on their first customers in the following year and hit their stride in 2019. “Building a software product is a time-consuming process!” They also faced hurdles in funding, coding, and sourcing talented employees and contractors – all of which take immense amounts of time and effort. “As we’ve grown, we’ve solved problems and found new ones! It’s a continuing journey.”

Josh was one of the original members of the Rock31 Founders Group, as well as one of the first to claim a private office when the Rock31 Coworking Space was being constructed. We asked Josh to share what he finds most exciting about being a part of Rock31 and he responded: “I love the people here! Seeing all the interesting things that other entrepreneurs are working on is inspiring. The community here is amazing. It’s incredibly exciting to see everyone here grow their business and grow as a community.”

To close out this Member Spotlight on Josh, we had to ask him our most hard-hitting questions:

What are some of your hobbies/interests (outside of the office)?

Hobbies? Free time? What’s that?

What is the best book you have ever read?

I don’t think I can pick a single book. I think that The Lean Startup by Eric Ries and Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson are must-reads for new entrepreneurs. I’m currently reading A Philosophy of Software Design by John Ousterhout, which is a great read for software engineers.

A genie grants you the ability to have an infinite amount of one item. What is it?

Time! That one’s easy!
